Is Boston the best sports city in America? According to a new ranking, it’s up there, but not No. 1.
Personal finance company WalletHub released its list of best sports cities in America, and Boston came in second.
WalletHub said the list was compiled based on various data, such as the total percentage of adults in the U.S. who claim to follow football, baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey.
“The best sports cities overall tend to be those with the highest-performing, most-popular professional teams, like Los Angeles, Boston, Pittsburgh and New York,” a WalletHub analyst said.
Here’s why Boston took one of the top spots.
Why is Boston one of the best sports cities?
WalletHub ranked Boston as the second best sports city in America based on data of sports fans in the city across football, baseball, basketball, hockey and soccer.
To measure Boston and other cities, each sports category was assigned a weight corresponding with the total percentage of adults in the U.S. who claim to follow each of the major sports. These categories were graded on a 100-point scale based on favorable conditions for sports fans and averaged together.
Boston earned a total score of 50.84, ranking No. 1 for hockey and No. 2 for basketball. Football and baseball in Boston were each ranked No. 5, and soccer was ranked at No. 19.
