Small businesses urged to check unclaimed property database
BOSTON (WGGB/WSHM) – State officials are urging small business owners to check online for possible unclaimed property.
The call from the office of Massachusetts Treasurer Deborah Goldberg comes as part of National Small Business Week and after her office’s Unclaimed Property Division released more than 50,000 new properties in March that are owed to individuals and businesses. Those properties can include items including uncashed checks, insurance benefits, and forgotten bank accounts.
Goldberg explained in a statement: “Did you know that small business owners may have unclaimed property too? It is not just for individual people…so, check the list, go online, or call our office to search for your business’ name and begin the process of claiming your property.”
Small businesses should visit findmassmoney.gov and search their business name to check for any unclaimed property.
In 2023, the treasurer’s office process approximately $185 million worth of unclaimed property claims and, over the last five years, has returned nearly $780 million.
Questions about unclaimed property and how to search for it can be directed to their call center at (888) 344-MASS (6277).
