Teton Pass avalanche infrastructure test planned for 3 a.m.

WILSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has announced that Teton Pass will be closed in the wee hours of Wednesday, Nov. 27, to allow the agency to test its avalanche infrastructure.

WYDOT said the Pass will be closed starting at 3 a.m. from the Wilson gate at milepost 7 to the Idaho state line at milepost 17.5. Anticipated closure time is one hour.

During the closure, the Gazex avalanche mitigation system on Mount Glory will be “fired multiple times,” according to the announcement. In heavy snow conditions, these machines are used to trigger smaller avalanches to reduce the chances of a large, uncontrolled avalanche in the area.

“Highway travelers and backcountry users are advised to plan accordingly,” WYDOT’s announcement reads. “Thank you for you cooperation.”
