Travel restrictions in place starting at Ohio-Pennsylvania border for snow

CLEVELAND — Ohioans may be traveling between the Buckeye State and Pennsylvania for the holiday weekend.

But because of incoming snow, which is expected to dump more than a foot of snow in some parts of NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has placed travel restrictions on some roadways. 

Effective Friday, the following vehicle restrictions are in place for Pennsylvania: 

• Interstate 90 from the Ohio state line to the New York state line
• Interstate 86 from I-90 to the New York state line
• Interstate 79 from Exit 147 (Route 19/Route 322/Route 6/Meadville) to the end of I-79 in Erie County

Under PennDOT’s Tier 1 and Tier 4 restrictions, the following vehicles are not allowed on the affected roadways:

• Tractors without trailers
• Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers
• Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers
• Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV
• Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers
• Recreational vehicles/motorhomes
• School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches
• Motorcycles

Additionally, speed limits are restricted to 45 mph on the affected roadways while the restrictions are in place. All commercial vehicles not affected must stay in the right lane. 

Spectrum News 1 has reached out to the Ohio Department of Transportation to see if vehicle restrictions will be in place for the Ohio side. As of Friday morning, ODOT hasn’t announced any restrictions.
