Thanksgiving travel weekend wrapping up

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) — Now that Thanksgiving is over, many who traveled for the holiday are headed back home.

With this, roads and airways are expected to be busy.

“My travels have been awesome,” said Aliya Constant of Charlotte, N.C. as she prepared to board her flight at the Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) Sunday after spending Thanksgiving in the city.

“I had a great time, wonderful visiting Harrisburg,” Constant said.

While the airport wasn’t too busy Sunday, Scott Miller with HIA says, “Monday will be the busiest day of the Thanksgiving travel week at HIA as the remaining vacation travelers head home and business travelers return to work.  Traffic over the past week was expected to be 1-2 percent above last year.”

Constant tells abc27 News, she had no delays or issues when traveling this year, “Definitely have run into issues in the past, but this was a perfect situation this weekend.”

This is also a busy time on the roadways.

“Sunday will be, you know, one of more busy days as folks head back home after hopefully a fun and safe Thanksgiving holiday,” said Crispin Havener with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. “Between Tuesday and today (Sunday), we were expecting more than 3.4 million travelers on the turnpike. These are some of our busiest days on the roadway all year.”

The roads used to be busier, pre-pandemic, of course.

“A lot of that actually has more to do with the fact that a lot of folks are still working from home compared to pre-pandemic or, you know, are in a fully remote job,” Havener added. “So, we have not seen passenger vehicle traffic return 100% to normal levels, although it’s close. Hopefully as we move on the next year or two, we do fully get back to above and beyond pre-pandemic levels in terms of car traffic.”
