IHSAA to add girls wrestling and boys volleyball as fully sanctioned sports

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The IHSAA has approved full recognition for Boys Volleyball and Girls Wrestling, beginning in the next school year.

After being added to the emerging sport process in 2022, the state now has over 1,400 students involved in girls wrestling at 177 different schools, and that includes schools right here in the Tri-State. Mt. Vernon has already built up quite the girls wrestling program, along with Reitz high school. The Head Coach of the Reitz wrestling program, Scott Ferguson, says gaining full recognition as an IHSAA sport will only help the sport’s growth.

“The numbers kept growing and growing,” said Reitz Wrestling Coach Scott Ferguson. “In fact, even at the international level, we’ve got girls that are from this state that are making the Olympic team right now, so I think it gives other young girls something to look up to.”

“I’m excited for it to grow and more girls to join,” said Junior Girls Wrestler Lili Greenfield. “I think they should definitely give it a shot, it’s a lot of fun and you learn a lot from it.”

Not only was girls wrestling added, but so was boys volleyball! Both girls wrestling and boys volleyball will become officially sanctioned IHSAA sports come the fall.
