James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision, Meta Ink Multi-Year Partnership For 3D Entertainment

James Cameron and his Lightstorm Vision venture is teaming up with Meta in a comprehensive, multi-year partnership around 3D content for the Meta Quest VR headset that also aims to expand the reach of the technology production tools and new content in the entertainment industry.

In a blog post by Meta, Cameron said he was introduced to the company’s advanced tech and “was amazed by its transformational potential and power, and what it means for content creators globally. I’m convinced we’re at a true, historic inflection point.”

Specifically, the industry veteran behind the Avatar franchise and Titanic, who’s been a pioneer in merging technology and storytelling, and Meta, wants to scale the creation of “world-class 3D entertainment experiences” spanning live sports and concerts, feature films and TV series featuring big-name IP on Meta Quest, which will be Lightstorm Vision’s exclusive MR (mixed reality) hardware platform.

There were no details yet on any planned projects.

“More people are using virtual and mixed reality headsets than ever before, opening up exciting new possibilities for immersive storytelling. Through our collaboration with Lightstorm Vision, we’re committed to moving media forward and to improving content creators’ ability to make high-quality stereoscopic content through the use of advanced tooling, including employing AI,” Meta said.

Cameron is currently on the board of visual media-focused Stability AI, a growing player in the AI space led by CEO Prem Akkaraju.

The agreement calls for co-producing a steady stream of original content, leveraging Lightstorm Vision’s technology and production techniques. The goal is also to make 3D production tools, and content, more accessible across the broader entertainment industry.

“We’re honored to be able to work alongside them to help lower the production costs associated with top-tier 3D content and deliver a steady stream of mainstream immersive shows,” Meta said.
