Flint-area sports highlights: LInden, Fenton split Metro League softball showdown
FLINT – The softball showdown between the top two teams in the Flint Metro League decided nothing Monday.
Both teams took 8-0 Metro League records into their doubleheader and both left with 9-1 marks after splitting the twinbill.
Linden won the opener 5-0 behind the one-hit pitching of Kayla Widner, who struck out 13. Bella Indish and Ava Siegwald belted two-run homers for the Eagles (16-2).
Fenton (10-2) won the nightcap 6-1.
Indish and Morgan Piotrovsky had three apiece on the night for Linden.
Holly sweeps Kearsley
Holly had little trouble taking two from Kearsley, winning the opener 18-3 before capturing the nightcap 15-0. Both games went four innings.
In the opener, Molly Charboneau led Holly with three hits and four RBIs. Evelyn Miller added three RBIs, Paisley McDonald drove in two runs and winning pitcher Alyssa Bowman allowed two hits. London Struck-Curtis had two RBIs for Kearsley.
Bowman pitched a no-hitter in the nightcap and allowed just one base runner, who was thrown out attempting to steal.
Megan McMullen led Holly with three hits and three runs, Paisley McDougall had four RBIs, Charboneau scored three times and Abbey Quick had three RBIs.
Clio sweeps Owosso
Clio hiked its record to 9-1 by beating Owosso 5-0 and 5-2. Winning pitcher Addie Taylor allowed four hits, two walks and struck out eight in the opener. Owosso’s Danika Dwyer had two hits.
In the nightcap, Clio erased a 2-1 deficit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The big blows were Kate Sperling’s game-winning three-run homer and a solo homer by Penney Malin that tied the game. Owosso is 8-2 in the Metro.
BASEBALL
Genesee Christian, Bentley split
Alex Walls, Will Duthler and Noah Wills all had multiple hits for Genesee Christian in a 9-4 win during the opener. Bentley won the nightcap 5-4. Losing pitcher Bryce Johns struck out six and allowed no earned runs. Genesee Christian (11-3) got two hits from Colin Zwierzynski.
Owosso, Clio split
Clio won the opener 7-6, when Owosso was led by Carson Moore and Eden Ackley with three hits apiece. Liam Patrick added two hits for the Trojans.
Owosso captured the nightcap 2-0. Winning pitcher Harrison Sydow struck out and Moore had two RBIs.
Armada 7, Imlay City 0
Imlay City saw its record fall to 4-8 overall and 0-7 in the Blue Water Area Conference.
GOLF
Owosso shoots season low
Owosso shot a season-low 163 to beat Linden (172) and Clio (186) at Owosso Country Club. Jon Mazza, Ryan Dahl, and Owen Feldpausch all shot 2-over-par 38 to lead the Trojans.
