Sabrina Ullman: Slick travel conditions with more snow on the way
Road conditions are slick for those in northern Minnesota and along the South Shore. The rain/snow line is further north than anticipated, stretching from Grand Rapids to the Twin Ports to Draper. We will see more of a wintry mix tonight in the areas currently seeing rain. The precipitation type will turn to snow throughout the Northland on Monday morning.
The Monday morning commute will coincide with poor road conditions. The snow has been wet and heavy so far, making travel difficult for many. As colder air ushers in, the snow ratio will increase, making the snow lighter and fluffier. This will make the rest of the snowfall easier to shovel.
On and off snow showers will persist for most of the day on Monday. We will see some rain briefly mix in with the snow in the afternoon as temperatures reach the upper 30s for many. Additional accumulations tonight through Monday will be 3-6 inches near the international border and under an inch for the Twin Ports and areas south.
Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the upper teens to low 20s. Drastically colder conditions will begin on Wednesday as areas west of Duluth struggle to stay above zero.
Thursday will be colder with afternoon highs in the negative single digits along the Iron Range and north. Overnight lows for both nights will be in the negatives with many areas dropping down to the negative teens. The good news is that this will be short-lived. Our afternoon highs will be back to the upper 20s by the weekend.
