Kentucky residents bet $2.9 billion in the first 14 months of legal sports betting in the commonwealth, according to a new report from the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation.
The total includes bets placed from September 2023 through October 2024. Of the $2.9 billion in wagers, $2.8 billion were made via online betting platforms, while the remaining $100 million in bets were made at brick-and-mortar locations, according to the report.
The bets created about $46.1 million in tax revenue for Kentucky, with $43.1 million coming in the first 12 months. Officials estimated generating $23 million in revenue in the first year.
State law distributes the tax revenue three ways. First, the revenue covers administrative expenses of running the program. Roughly 2.5% of the collected taxes are directed toward the problem gambling fund, with the remaining total going to Kentucky’s pension fund.
Sports betting became legal on Sept. 7, 2023 after the Kentucky General Assembly approved a bill on the final day of the the year’s legislative session.
