‘They are big business and we will do everything we can to keep them’: Gov. Parson talks Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Missouri Governor Mike Parson said they will utilize all the tools they can at the state level to show they want and need the Kansas City Chiefs.

He made himself available after the groundbreaking ceremony for Americold. The company touts itself as a global leader in logistics, real estate, and value-added services in Kansas City. That facility will bring $127 million in investments and create 187 new jobs.

Another Missouri investment, the Chiefs.

It’s much more than just the outcome of the play on the football or baseball fields.

“We have to compete with every state, every day in the United States to try to get businesses to come here. They are big business and we will do everything we can to keep them because they have a huge impact on our state. So, there are a lot of things outside of sports, the economy side is huge,” said Parson.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas is sharing his opinion on the controversy: “I tend not to feed the freakout, but I will note that the Missouri Legislature, which is still in session, can match [or outdo] whatever tools are to be considered in Kansas, particularly sales tax redirection from the stadiums and surrounds [in essence STAR bonds]. I remain unworried about team moves, given the pretty ample tools at issue and our ability to outbid for the state of Missouri and Kansas City. That said, I appreciate the clarity the teams have provided and the open nature of competition.”

The Jackson County Legislature checked in with Jackson County Executive Frank White about where the negotiations stand. Legislator Manny Abarca specifically asked for any new strategies to keep the teams where they are.

White responded that right now, there are none and that he is waiting on the right time to speak with them to discuss an agreement everyone can live with.

All of this on the heels of statements from Chiefs Owner Clark Hunt claiming the team is open to moving elsewhere but has not yet entertained talks with Kansas state leaders.
