Reno’s Luke Hobson part of world record-setting swim relay team

Reno’s Luke Hobson continued his amazing year.

He was part of the world record-setting relay team in the Short Course World Swimming Championships on Tuesday.

Hobson swam the second leg on the U.S. men’s team as they obliterated the previous world record in the 4-by-100-meter swim relay at the event being held in Budapest.

Jack Alexy swam the first leg and turned in a world championship and U.S. record time of 45.05 seconds for 100 meters. He was followed by Hobson (45.18), Kieran Smith (46.01) and Chris Guiliano (45.42) as they ran away with the world title by two seconds.

The U.S. team posted a time of 3:01.66, knocking more than a second off the previous world record of 3:02.75 set by the Italians at the 2022 Short Course World Championships.

Alexy’s time of 45.05 in the lead-off broke the American record of 45.08 in the 100 free, which was held jointly by Nathan Adrian and Caeleb Dressel, and he beat Kyle Chalmers‘ World Championship record of 45.16 set in 2022.

Prior to Tuesday’s relay swim, the American record in the men’s 4×100 free relay was 3:03.03, set by Dressel, Blake Pieroni, Michael Chadwick and Ryan Held in 2018.

Hobson, a 2021 Reno High graduate, won two medals at the Summer Olympics in Paris. He won silver at the Paris Olympics after swimming the lead leg on Team USA’s 4-by-200-meter freestyle relay and also won bronze in the 200-freestyle race.

Hobson is a senior at Texas.

In Tuesday’s race, the Italians were second in 3:03.65, while Poland took third 3:04.46.
