Children go on shopping spree for annual ‘Cops and Kids’ event – WBBJ TV
JACKSON, Tenn. — 20 lucky children in the Hub City received the shopping spree of a lifetime.
Santa’s helpers come in all sizes and shapes, and even job occupations. The Fraternal Order of Police had their annual ‘Cops and Kids’ event with the Boys and Girls Club.
“This makes me feel like Christmas is actually close. Until this happens it doesn’t feel like Christmas to me,” Jeff Sheppard, president of local Fraternal Order of Police.
Kids are given a $225 budget that can be used on toys, clothes, food and $90 towards electronics.
One shopper shares a few items on their shopping list.
“I got Squishmellows, markers — a lot,” said Ava, lucky shopper.
This opportunity is made possible by the help of some sponsors.
“Luckily we have both corporate and individual sponsors and every year they come through for us. We really want to extend our thanks to them,” said Sheppard.
For the past 5 years, children have had the opportunity to shop with either retired or current officers.
“Law enforcement are a special group of individuals to be able to spend time with, whether they’re retired professionals or currently working. We just appreciate their heart and their spirit” said Sabrina Anderson, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Jackson.
These children are not required to have a list of items that they may want, this is the ultimate shopping spree.
“It is off the top of their head for most of them. I tell them all the time ‘Think about what you would like to have. Think about who you want to share with.’ And so they really do, and they do a good job,” said Anderson.
In the years past, a popular item that was bought were bikes and this year an old, reliable toy returned.
“They usually try to get some movies. I noticed someone even got a hula hoop! I didn’t even know they still made hula hoops,” said Sheppard.
After shopping and spending time with local officers, these children were given a nice snack for their hard work.
