Not to drone on, but this weekend’s all about the holidays, and a Holiday Drone Show
I recently wrote about the next-level Christmas light displays in downtown Wilmington this year, and about the collaborative efforts between local government and various agencies that made it happen.
It’s all part of creating a more nostalgic (and business-friendly) vibe around downtown for the holidays. In some ways that hearkens back to the downtown Wilmington of yesteryear, but there’s also a contemporary component: Like the first-ever Holiday Drone Show to be held over the Cape Fear River for the next three Fridays.
Info on that and much more in this week’s Port City Life newsletter.
Weekend weather outlook
After going from cold to humid rain and back to cold over the past week, this weekend’s weather should be mostly sunny and mild. Highs near 60 and lows around 40, with a chance of rain and a little warmer on Sunday.
Go | See | Do
We are right in the heart of the holiday season, and Wilmington’s got the events to show for it.
It’s a particularly good weekend for performances, with the Thalian Association opening holiday musical “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” at Thalian Hall, Techmoja Dance & Theatre Co. opening musical revue “A Cape Fear Christmas” at the Dreams Garage and Big Dawg Productions opening “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” in Thalian Hall’s studio.
Plus, it’s the last “Nutcracker” of the year at CFCC’s Wilson Center, and Wilmington’s first-ever Holiday Drone Show will form a seasonal display over the Cape Fear River downtown. Full list of events at the link below.
The Dish with Port City Foodies
Food writer Allison Ballard has a few holiday-themed pop-ups to try at Wilmington bars and restaurants, and a full list of all the latest openings and closings in the area.
Plus, a local boba tea chain adds ramen to its menu and late-night hours to its downtown location.
Getting to know Justin Smith
Wilmington actor Justin Smith is all up in “Saturday Night,” the new movie from Oscar-nominated director Jason Reitman about the frantic first night NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” went on the air in 1975.
“Saturday Night” screens Dec. 16-18 at Thalian Hall as part of the Cinematique film series. I’ll lead a post-screening Q&A with Smith at Thalian on Monday. Read more about his “Saturday Night” experience below.
