Tennessee swimmer Jordan Crooks sets short course world record in 50 free in Hungary
Tennessee swimmer Jordan Crooks set a short course world record with a time of 19.90 seconds in the 50 free Saturday during an event in Budapest, Hungary.
The Vols swimmer broke the world record twice, becoming the first person to register a sub-20 second time in the 50 free at the 2024 Short Course World Championships. Crooks clocked a 20.08 time in his first performance, which topped the previous record of 20.16 set by Caeleb Dressel in 2020. He clocked the sub-20 second time in the semifinals and will compete in the finals Sunday.
The Cayman Islands native is the reigning world champion in the event.
Crooks won a bronze medal in the 100 free earlier in the week in Hungary. Tennessee junior Gui Caribe won a silver medal in the 100 free and will also be participating in the 50 free finals Sunday.
Crooks has won 21 SEC medals with six gold medals during his three seasons at Tennessee. He holds the UT program records in 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly. He has earned All-American honors in 18 events.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Crooks became the first swimmer from the Cayman Islands to advance to an Olympic final. He placed eighth overall in the 50 free — an event he broke the national record in during prelims. He advanced to the semifinals and finished 13th in the 100 free.
