5 Fashion Trends Worn By Animals

Animals are smarter than we give them credit for. While avoiding many of humanity’s pitfalls — pollution, social media, Black Friday — they can also do a lot of the same things we do. They even have their own sense of fashion.

Chimpanzees Wear Statement Earrings

In 2010, researchers noticed a chimpanzee in a Zambian sanctuary named Julie habitually sticking a blade of grass in her ear. They could determine no practical reason for this behavior and concluded that it must be for fashion reasons. Soon, most of the other chimps in the sanctuary began wearing blades of grass in their ears, too. It turns out Julie was a trendsetter.

Birds Decorate Their Nests

Anyone who knows the word “Japandi” knows that fashion extends far beyond our wardrobes and into the rest of our houses, and so do birds. When given access to different colors of yarn, they’ll tend to build their nests with whichever color they determine to be the new black. The same behavior has been observed in nature, too. Next year’s aesthetic: pinecore.

Vultures Wear Makeup

You know how some women rock a full face on the daily and some are more comfortable with a no-makeup look? The same is true for Egyptian vultures. Researchers have noticed a tendency of some, but not all, of these vultures to rub their heads around in red soil, coloring their naturally white feathers. “The amount and incidence of reddish head plumage on Egyptian vultures is quite rare,” one said, “suggesting that those who have it are indicating something special,” much like the girls on TikTok who line their lips with that peel-off stain.

Hares Change Colors With the Season

We don’t wear white after Labor Day, but it’s the opposite for many animals that live in snowy climates, particularly hares, who change from a summer brown-gray to a stark white to better hide from predators. Climate change is messing with their system of seasonal fashion, though. “They (still) think that they’re camouflaged,” one researcher has explained, “and it’s pretty embarrassing for the hare.” It’s okay, girl — we know what it’s like to be caught wearing last season’s look.

Whales Wear Hats

In the summer of 1987, orca whales in the Pacific Northwest began surfacing with dead salmon on top of their heads. It’s incredibly unclear why they did this; researchers theorized they were saving food, but that’s just their best guess, and the trend died out before they could put any serious thought into it. However, in 2024, two orcas in the Puget Sound were spotted reviving the salmon hat craze. If there’s anything better than knowing whales know what fashion is, it’s knowing they can go retro.
