Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Tuesday, April 30.
Baseball
Patterson Mill 4, North Harford 2: Travis Loewe pitched a five-hitter, giving up just two unearned runs while striking out seven. At the plate, Michael Hemelt doubled, singled and drove in three runs. Drew Szymanski also had an RBI.
Fallston 9, C. Milton Wright 2: Drew Rommel excelled at the plate and on the mound. Offensively he finished with two hits and an RBI. He also threw a complete-game six-hitter with five strikeouts. Paul Kvech doubled and drove in a run. Drew Murphy, Nate Slicher and Reese Conley also had RBIs.
Liberty 5, Pikesville 3: Down three runs after five innings, Liberty came alive in the sixth with four runs to steal the win. Carter Shanks went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Nate Martin and Aidan Scherr also drove in runs. Logan Garey got the win on the mound in relief.
Westminster 10, South Carroll 1: Brandon Barrett was one out shy of closing out a no-hitter, but still finished with the win, throwing 6 2/3 innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts. Clayton Dorsey had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of triples and two RBIs. EJ Youngling homered as part of a 3-for-3 day. He finished with two RBIs.
St. Mary’s 5, McDonogh 1: Winning pitcher Nick Hulme went six innings, gave up one run on six hits and struck out six to lead the visiting Saints (15-4, 10-2 MIAA B Conference) over the Eagles (11-5, 11-2). Henry Carbone (3-3) had a double and three RBIs for St. Mary’s.
Severn 2, St. Paul’s 1: Reliever Caden Blanck worked 5⅓ innings and struck out 12 to secure a spot in the MIAA B Conference playoffs for the host Admirals (10-6, 9-4). The Crusaders fell to 10-12, 7-6. Severn’s Matt Fisher had two hits, including the go-ahead single in the sixth inning.
Mount Carmel 4, Glenelg Country 1: The host Cougars (5-12, 2-10 MIAA B Conference) scored the go-ahead run in the third inning and added two runs in the fifth inning to beat the Dragons (3-9, 3-9).
Softball
Sparrows Point 16, Parkville 2: Katyanne Fouts went 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs to lead the Pointers’ offensive surge. Aly Montelongo had two hits and drove in three runs and Alexa Bienkowski went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Marisa Muffoletto chipped in two RBIs. In the circle, Anna Cardoso and L Miller combined on a three-hitter.
Patterson Mill 6, Carver A&T 2: The Huskies jumped out quick with four runs in the bottom of the first. Audrey March doubled twice, singled and finished with two RBIs. Savannah Reedy also had two RBIs on two hits. Lily Baldwin struck out 11 in a complete-game five-hitter.
C. Milton Wright 8, North Harford 1: Izzie Youngworth threw a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead the Mustangs. At the plate, she finished with three hits and two RBIs. Maddie Youngworth and Kendra Miller each had two hits and two RBIs. Julianna McJilton went 4-for-4 with two runs scored.
John Carroll 8, Spalding 2: Already up three, the Patriots broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning. Sophie Anderson tripled, doubled and drove in three runs to power the win. Ryan Pindell doubled and picked up two RBIs.
Westminster 13, South Carroll 3: The Owls pounded out 18 hits in the win. Libby Green, Mallory Johnson and Ryley Winebrunner each had three-hit days. Johnson, Gina Sullivan and Kayla Garland each finished with two RBIs. Johnson was also the game’s winning pitcher.
Annapolis Area Christian 13, Chapelgate Christian 9: The visiting Eagles (10-2, 8-0 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference) broke a 9-9 tie by scoring four runs in the fifth inning to beat the Yellow Jackets (6-3, 6-2). Madelyn Boyer, Brooke Fitzgerald, Ashlyn Case and Ava Bowie each hit an RBI double in the fifth inning. Reliever Sarah Billett worked two innings and struck out 10 for the win.
Boys lacrosse
Urbana 6, Towson 5: The Generals came up just short in a clash of unbeaten teams. Hudson Arrup had two goals and an assist for Towson. Connor Parks also scored twice. Alex Tyler finished with a goal and an assist and Ansen Park handed out two assists.
Spalding 16, St. Paul’s 9: Jack Newell scored five goals to lead the Cavaliers, while Brady Mollot totaled a team-best six points on two goals and four assists. Gordie Bennett added four goals, Trash Swidersky had three goals to go with an assist and Connor Wilbur had a goal and three assists.
Calvert Hall 9, Mount St. Joseph 5: Owen Scott and Peyton Forte each scored three goals to lead the host Cardinals (10-4, 7-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) over the Gaels (4-8, 1-7). Ryder Scott had a game-high four goals and Tyler Superczynski had a goal for Mount St. Joe. The victory was the sixth straight. Both teams have two regular-season games left to play.
Bel Air 10, Havre de Grace 9: The Bobcats overtook the Warriors in the fourth quarter of a back-and-forth game. Devin Trezciak led the win with three goals. Grant Smith and Jason Pitzer each scored twice and Ayden Shugart totaled a goal and two assists. In net, Patrick Cook made 15 saves.
Fallston 19, Harford Tech 4: The host Cougars took an 11-2 lead in the first half and beat the Cobras. Fallston was led by Gage McKenna (4 goals, 2 assists), Ian Swartzendruber (3 goals) and Jacob MacMillan (2 goals and 5 assists).
Mt. Hebron 18, Hammond 1: The Vikings (8-6, 6-2 Howard County) closed the regular-season with a fourth straight win in dominant fashion.
Centennial 16, River Hill 5: The Eagles (9-4, 5-4 Howard County) had a well-balanced offensive attack. Aiden Krawczyk had a game-high seven points (three goals, four assists), while Ryan Foy had a hat trick and three assists. Colby Dabbs scored four times, while Cam Westlake had two goals and four assists. Jack Hockersmith scored twice while Cirian Brighton made 20 saves.
Girls lacrosse
River Hill 13, Centennial 11: The Hawks (7-6, 4-4 Howard County) moved back over .500 with the win. Charlotte Laraway and Katelyn Sauritch shared the team-high with four goals each and each added an assist. Gabby Bergstrom shined as a facilitator with a game-high five assists, also adding a goal.
Mt. Hebron 20, Hammond 2: The Vikings (9-5, 6-2 Howard County) closed the regular-season with a fourth straight win. Taylor Shinskie had a team-high four points (two goals, two assists), while Ellie Smith, Ella Beger and Kaitlyn Magdar each had two goals and an assist. Sixteen different Mt. Hebron players scored.
Winters Mill 16, Smithsburg 2: Sienna Perryman had a hand in 14 of the Falcons’ 16 goals. She scored four and assisted on nine others. Olivia Pollard backed her with a hat trick, Rowan Dorsey had two goals and two assists, and Reese Ormiston finished with two goals and one assist. In net, Addison Vallandingham made eight saves.
South Carroll 12, Middletown 6: In addition to her six goals, Leah Miller collected 10 draw controls, giving her more than 200 now for her career. Also in the win, Addie Fowble scored twice with Cailin Yankle, Rowan Miller, Ella Boyce and Cathryn Yankle also scoring. Caelin Lopes made seven saves in goal.
Atholton 12, Wilde Lake 5: The Raiders (4-6, 4-5 Howard County) defeated the Wildecats for a second time this season.
Marriotts Ridge 20, Reservoir 7: Katie Leader and Bella Boats each scored four goals to lead the Mustangs (10-3, 6-1 Howard County) in the win. Chrish Vaxmonsky added a hat trick and two assists, while Allison Custer also had a hat trick. For Reservoir (8-5, 5-3) Bailey Ko had four goals.
Southern 9, North County 8, OT: Maggie Blankford scored a game-high five goals, but the Knights fell to the Bulldogs. Southern was led by Emmie Mudd (3 goals), Brooke Parks (2 goals) and Haylie Fleming (2 goals). Mikayla Petersen made 10 saves for North County.
South River 12, Arundel 4: South River gets the win over Arundel 12-4 in the second round of the AACPS Girls Lacrosse Showcase. Adella Norton led the Seahawks with four goals to lead the Seahawks over the Wildcats in the second round of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Showcase. South River got two goals each from Reese Toth and Alex Alto.
Broadneck 15, Chesapeake 7: Lily Trout poured in six goals to lead the Bruins past the Cougars. Sienna Miller and Nora Lopes each added three goals, Olivia Orso scored two and Molly Robinson made 10 saves in net. Lilly Patrick and Anna Kunes each had two goals for Chesapeake. Lexi Vosburg had a goal and an assist.
Coed tennis
Fallston 8, Aberdeen 3: The Cougars swept the girls singles matches with Juliana Kovalets and Camryn Barrett each scoring 6-0, 6-0 wins. Meghan Perez and Tanner Boyd on the boys side also won singles matches. Ryan Blair and Colby Resh won first boys doubles, 6-0, 6-0, and Zach Boczar and Luca Cangelosi won the No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-0. Kasey Resh and Ashley Tran won first girls doubles.
Boys tennis
Atholton 5, Mt. Hebron 0: Aryan Singh and Tristan Carter each won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Raiders 8-3 and 8-1, respectively. The doubles pairings of Jason Lilly and Sam Li, Nikhil Ramani and Jacob Tagawa and Aiden Kwon and Nathan Li each won their matches.
Liberty 5, Manchester Valley 0: The Lions (12-0, 11-0) got one step closer to finishing out an unbeaten season. Nikhil Andhavarapu won first singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Louis Major outlasted Mason Parr in a marathon second singles match, 2-6, 6-3, 14-12. In doubles, Arjun Mistry and Hayden Speace cruised at the first spot. Austin Shade and Jason Murphy added a 6-0, 6-4 win, and Chase King and Jayden Venable won, 6-2, 6-1.
Girls tennis
Atholton 3, Mt. Hebron 2: Clara Kadingo won 8-4 at No. 2 singles for the Raiders. The No. 1 and No. 3 doubles pairings of Angelina Gizdova and Chelsea Sun and Crystal Hicks and Sofia Hufft each won.
Manchester Valley 4, Liberty 1: The Mavericks picked up a big county win that ensures them at least a share of the county title, thanks in part to three-set doubles wins at the first two spots. Emily McElwaine and Madison MacGregor won the No. 1 match 6-1, 3-6, 10-3. Tori Kelley and Olivia Watts won second doubles, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. Katy Resh and Talula Castanzo added singles wins. Liberty got a win at third doubles from Aubrey Anderson and Lilli Kashima.
