Nets waive Cui Yongxi following Dennis Schroder trade to Warriors

The Brooklyn Nets (10-15) have begun the process of trading away some of the veterans on the team that could jeopardize the franchise’s chance of getting a high draft pick. Brooklyn traded guard Dennis Schroder to the Golden State Warriors this weekend in exchange for two players and two second-round picks, but they also had to let go of a player to make the deal work.

The Nets announced on Sunday that the trade sending Schroder to the Warriors was officially confirmed and they provided the details of everything that will exchanged. For the purpose of this article, Brooklyn had to waive Two-Way forward Cui Yongxi because the Nets acquired Two-Way guard Reece Beekman from Golden State to make the deal work.

Yongxi, similar to guard De’Anthony Melton that Brooklyn acquired, is currently out for the rest of this season after tearing his left ACL last week. While it was initially thought that Yongxi would be recovering from his injury as a member of the Nets, it is possible that Yongxi could be a Two-Way for Brooklyn next season once he recovers from his injury.

The Nets expect Yongxi to fully recover from his knee injury so the good news is that he should be playing next season in some capacity. However, it was surprising to see that Yongxi be waived despite the fact that Brooklyn acquired another Two-Way player who can play right now and show what he can do at the G League level for a rebuilding Nets team.

Beekman, 23, signed a two-way contract with the Warriors on July 3 and appeared in two games for Golden State. He also played in nine Tip-Off Tournament games (seven starts) with Golden State’s NBA G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, recording averages of 18.7 points on 51.5 percent shooting from the field, 5.2 rebounds, 7.3 assists (ninth in the NBA G League) and 2.8 steals (third in the NBA G League) in 31.5 minutes per contest.
