Apple’s 18.8-Inch Large Foldable Device, Expected In 2027, Could Be An iPad Or Mac Depending On The Operating System Apple Chooses
Apple is experimenting with new foldable products that are expected to launch in the years to come. According to a new report, we might see the iPad Pro get the new technology first, but it depends on which operating system the company goes ahead with. The company is working on several upgrades for its iPad lineup, including an OLED version of the iPad mini, which is expected to arrive in 2026. We have recently covered that Apple is working on a foldable version of the iPad Pro, which will equal the size of two tablets when unfolded.
Apple is expected to launch a large foldable device in 2027, which could be an iPad or a Mac
According to Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultant, Apple is working to introduce the foldable iPad Pro in 2027, which will be an OLED display, potentially using the same technology as the current version. The iPad Pro will be 18.8-inches in size, and it could be one of the first devices to get the foldable technology, amidst rumors that the company also has plans to launch a foldable MacBook.
It was recently reported by The Wall Street Journal that Apple’s first larger foldable device, which will be “intended to serve a laptop,” would be about 19 inches when it is in an unfolded state. This is not the first time that we have heard details of a larger device from Apple with a foldable approach, as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also shared that the company is working on a “giant” tablet, and it is expected to launch in 2028.
The rumors and reports regarding a gigantic foldable device are consistent, which means that there is a high chance Apple engineers are working on the product. It is very early to draw a final conclusion, as the product rests in an experimental phase. Apple is possibly waiting for the industry to introduce a hinge mechanism that meets its standards. The foldable device could be an iPad or a Mac, depending on which operating system the company opts for. It will be a foldable iPad if the company chooses iPadOS and a foldable MacBook if the company sees fit to port macOS.
Other than the foldable device, Apple is also working on an OLED version of the iPad mini, which is expected to see daylight in 2026. Since Apple takes about three years to upgrade the iPad mini, we can safely presume that the iPad mini 8 will feature an OLED panel, which could fix the jelly scrolling issue for good. Ross Young also claims that the company will also see fit to upgrade the iPad Air models in 2027 with an OLED display alongside the entry-level iPad. This means that the company has plans to upgrade its entire product line with OLED displays in the coming years. Do you think Apple will increase the price of the iPad mini after it upgrades the device with an OLED display? Let us know in the comments.
