A Dreamy Solo Trip to Isla Mujeres: Relaxation, Adventure, and Stunning Views
Looking for a respite from the daily grind and wanting to recharge myself before the holidays, I was excited to learn of a place in the Mexican Caribbean called Isla Mujeres, the “Island of Women.” Located 8 miles off the coast of Cancún, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, this 5-mile-long island is a gorgeous, serene escape from the bustle of the tourist-filled hotel zone. This was just what I was looking for, so I booked a 4-day trip! This would be my first time traveling solo for a vacation, slightly out of my comfort zone, and I worried I might feel out of place among the families, couples and groups of friends also seeking an island getaway. But nothing could be further from the truth. There was no shortage of things to do, and the resort staff and locals were very welcoming. It was a wonderful home away from home.
After a short, direct flight to Cancún International Airport, I took a quick taxi ride to the ferry, and enjoyed a 20-minute boat ride complete with local musical entertainment on the upper deck. The moment the ferry from the mainland pulls away, the pace of life shifts. The waters turn a deeper blue, the air smells of salt and vacation and the world seems to slow down in rhythm with the gentle sway of the boat.
When I arrived at the all-inclusive, 5-star Mía Reef Isla Mujeres resort, my breath was taken away as I gazed down the long bridge that led to this paradise I’d call home for the next few days. The private beach, the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the delicious margaritas and other cocktails, the outstanding service and the most wonderful staff I’ve ever met were always at the ready. Swimming in the crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by all the beautiful, colorful fish was stunning. And there were plenty of cool things on the resort grounds to enjoy, including live music and flamenco dancers at night!
On day 2, I took a 4-hour guided snorkeling tour at the Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), an impressive collection of more than 500 life-size underwater sculptures. I learned the museum, which is part of a conservation effort to promote marine life, was created to alleviate pressure on the region’s natural coral reefs by providing an alternative space for divers and snorkelers to explore. By creating artificial structures, it encourages marine life to flourish and keeps visitors away from the fragile natural reefs. There were 8 others on my tour—three couples and a mother-daughter duo. Our boat driver and our snorkeling guide were extremely knowledgeable and friendly—the whole group had an amazing time and we enjoyed one another’s company as we explored the beautiful sculptures and coral reefs, swimming alongside an array of tropical fish. Swimming through the quiet, surreal underwater world was an unforgettable experience—like being in a dream.
I then returned to Mía and had a 50-minute Swedish massage in the hotel’s spa (A++ for pampering—I left feeling like a relaxed puddle of mush), followed by perhaps the most delicious dinner I’ve ever had at one of the hotel’s four restaurants, Las Marías. The fresh grilled octopus was plump, juicy and a culinary masterpiece. After I was pleasantly stuffed, I turned in to my room and enjoyed a mojito on my private balcony overlooking the ocean.
Perhaps my favorite place to visit was on day 3, the Garrafon Reef Park, an eco-park located on the southern tip of Isla Mujeres. It’s an excellent destination for those looking for a mix of relaxation, adventure and nature. I started off enjoying the refreshing infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean, then some more snorkeling with the beautiful fish—though I didn’t see a sea turtle that day, they say they’re spotted there often! Everything I did at the park is included with admission—buffet-style authentic Mexican lunch, unlimited frozen cocktails and drinks, kayaking, paddleboarding, ziplining, lounge areas…I did it all! I spent the whole day there and felt like I could’ve done it again the next day. But perhaps my favorite part of the park was when I took a walk on the winding rock path to see some sculptures (above water this time!), and perhaps the most beautiful, breathtaking views of the entire area!
While I spent most of my time at the Mía resort and on excursions, there was a cute downtown area full of restaurants and shopping, just a 5-minute walk from the resort. A great place to grab a happy hour drink or two, nosh on some fresh guacamole, pick up souvenirs or just get out and stretch your legs. Even as a solo female traveler, I felt very safe and welcome.
As I scrolled through my photos at the airport and reminisced about the fun things I did, I couldn’t help but feel like I’d been there much longer than just a few days—I was completely immersed in the culture, the beauty, the relaxed vibe. It was just what I needed to recharge!
