It’s the last holiday season to travel before you’ll need a REAL ID
WISCONSIN — Heading home for the holidays? It may be the last holiday season you can travel with your current ID.
Starting May 7, 2025, Wisconsinites will need to abide by updated identification requirements in order to board a flight, enter a federal building or go to a military base.
Travelers will need to show acceptable forms of identification, such as a REAL ID-compliant driver license, state ID card or passport. The non-REAL ID-compliant version of a Wisconsin driver license or state ID will no longer be accepted identification for such activities.
In Wisconsin, driver licenses and ID cards have been compliant since Jan. 14, 2013. Wisconsin residents need to renew their REAL IDs every eight years. Because of the renewal requirement, all Wisconsin residents have had the option to convert to a REAL ID the last time they went to update their license or state ID.
However, Wisconsin still offers both REAL ID-compliant non-compliant driver licenses and ID cards. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) noted that the IDs do look similar, but the REAL IDs are marked with a star symbol. Non-compliant IDs are marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES.”
“Under state law, Wisconsin DMV provides both options,” WisDOT Division of Motor Vehicles Administrator Tommy Winkler said. “Those who want the REAL ID designation should start now. Visit wisconsindmv.gov/REALID to learn about what documents are required to present at a DMV, start the application online, and make an appointment for service to make your trip as quick and convenient as possible.”
The REAL ID act was passed by congress all the way back in 2005. Congress hoped that by standardizing state-issued driver licenses and ID cards, it would prevent identity fraud and enhance national security.
For those without a REAL ID, there are other acceptable forms of identification to fly, such as a passport. For a full list of ID forms accepted by TSA, click here.
Costs and requirements
Residents with a driver’s license or ID may purchase a REAL ID-compliant card for $14 or an ID card for $16. If you decide to upgrade to a REAL ID as part of a standard renewal process, there is no additional fee.
