Snow likely to cause slick travel overnight, early Wednesday

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Snowfall has been noticeably lacking in and around the Stateline so far this December, though that’s to change, at least modestly in the days ahead.

An Alberta Clipper system is to bring snowfall to the Stateline over a several hour period as we close out Tuesday and enter the opening hours of our Wednesday. Thankfully, snow should be long gone in plenty of time for the morning commute.

Accumulations will likely come in under an inch in most areas, though one or two communities could pick up an inch. While hardly a crippling system, it could produce just enough snow to make roadways slick during the overnight and early morning hours.

Wednesday, we’ll be between two weather systems, meaning we’re to be quiet for most of the day. Clouds are to stick around early in the day, though mixed sunshine should emerge at some point during the afternoon. Expect high temperatures in the middle 30s.

Another clipper system will drop southeastward on Thursday, bringing renewed chances for snow, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Again, we’re not looking at a mammoth snow producer, but most spots can expect up to an inch of new snowfall, and there is the potential of there being impacts for the Thursday evening commute.

Trends continue to suggest that after a rather chilly weekend, a warmer pattern takes hold again next week. Overall, our chances of seeing a White Christmas appear to remain quite low, though should either of this week’s storm systems overperform and deliver more snow than forecast, it’s possible we hold onto the cold a little bit longer, which could keep the snow on the ground a day or two longer. Only time will tell.
