Rochester small business faces challenges during holiday season

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – December is in full swing and so is the holiday shopping season. However, small businesses can face unique challenges when this time of year arrives.

Rochester’s Real Deals is one of these small businesses. While the business said it has had a successful holiday shopping season this year, it claims there have been challenges in the midst of it all.

Owner Ashley Moberg said its tough keeping up with larger brands, since they have a larger backing. To counter this, she said she works to create a unique environment for her customers.

“We provide something that big box stores don’t and we’re proud of that and our customers know it,” Moberg said. “I think that a lot of times they will think of us before they go to those stores.”

She added how this week before Christmas, her store can provide an alternative for shoppers that are used to shopping online.

“Do you really want to shop on Amazon? Because you don’t know if you’re going to get it in time,” Moberg added. “You can come in here [and] you can get something unique. You can take it home, wrap it right away, and have the comfort of knowing that you don’t have to worry about the Postal Service getting you your package in time.”

According to the National Retail Federation, consumer spending for the holidays will reach a record $902 per person, a $25 increase from last year.
