Happy Holidays From Our Radio Circles – Radio World
Our readers and staff celebrate the season
We asked our devoted readers and Radio World staff to share festive photos to celebrate the holiday season. It’s safe to say they did not disappoint! Some of these pics capture cheerful holiday displays at radio stations and transmitter sites. Others depict beloved pets, rockin’ mascots and, of course, Santa.
Radio World Assistant Editor Elle Kehres shares this funny snapshot of her fiancé, Matt, Santa and her kitty, Lionel. “If you look closely into Lionel’s eyes, you might see him plotting our doom,” said Elle. “Despite getting into my plants, making a mess of his litter and being a general menace to society, he’s been a very good boy this year!”
Our new staff writer Nick Langan shares a couple of festive pics of his own below.
“It’s myself, my mother and the one and only Kenny G at his Christmas concert in 2022 in New Brunswick, N.J.,” said Nick. “According to Billboard, Kenny G’s ‘Miracles’ album is the best selling holiday album of all time and for me, his music is a large reason for why I got into ‘smooth jazz’ as a kid and have some of the crazy obsessions (including radio) that I do.”
Elle’s pet isn’t the only one to take holiday pictures with one of Santa’s “helpers”!
Pictured below is Nick’s Airedale Terrier, Judy, Nick and Santa from Christmas 2022.
Radio World Editor in Chief Paul McLane is a fan of Christmas lights that make a statement — hence the posing with these 3-foot-tall LED jumbo bulbs.
Tim Koza, chief engineer at KJLH Los Angeles, submitted the following photo. “A large Christmas tree made of lights is constructed fairly close to our transmitter site every year,” wrote Tim. “It makes the radio waves a little more merry.”
Jeff Schick of Sprite Media said: “Here’s a photo from our SBE 15 New York City Holiday Party at Legends Restaurant right across the street from the Empire State Building.”
Radio World contributor Dan Slentz passed along a couple photos courtesy of “The Rock Dog 105.9 WDOG(LP)” in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Dan helped launch the LPFM earlier this year.
He writes: “Though the dog is just a ‘pup’ (being only five months old), it was in two parades (one in Dover, Ohio, and the other in our city of license, New Philadelphia), and the station held a coat and food drive with the Salvation Army to help the needy in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.”
“The day-long Salvation Army drive (Friday 12/6) was a huge success,” said Dan, “and included a contest to see Donnie Iris & The Cruisers at MGM Northfield Park.”
Public Radio Tulsa Chief Engineer Brad Newman is once again lending Santa a helping hand — not only granting kids their Christmas wishes, but also keeping stations like KWGS on the air. This is his eighth holiday season donning the red suit and hat. Read more about this station Santa in a 2023 story by Public Radio Tulsa.
Buzzard Bob Hawkins, the program director and chief engineer at WNAP(FM) Indianapolis, has a 240′ tower in his backyard, and every year he puts up a huge Christmas tree in lights up on his tower. This tower hosts the translator for WNAP’s 91.7 FM frequency.
In his submission, Dave Mason wrote: “Per your request, here’s an awesome picture from 1972 WENE/WMRV radio, Endicott-Binghamton, NY (owned at the time by Merv Griffin) and the staff at the annual holiday party. It was a great crew.”
