Discount retail chain Big Lots announced on Dec. 19 that the company is preparing to begin going out of business sales at all remaining store locations.
Big Lots previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September following plans to close 340 stores across the country. At the time, Big Lots officials said that the closures were part of a sale agreement with an affiliate of Nexus Capital Management LP, according to a news release.
The most recent news release from the company said that officials do not anticipate completing this asset purchase agreement, though “it continues to work toward completing an alternative going concern transaction with Nexus or another party.”
“We all have worked extremely hard and have taken every step to complete a going concern sale,” CEO Bruce Thorn said in the recent release. “While we remain hopeful that we can close an alternative going concern transaction, in order to protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to begin the GOB process.”
The chain joins several other retailers that have shuttered stores and declared bankruptcy throughout 2024.
