GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline received 55,228 calls and online chats from individuals experiencing gambling-related harm in 2023/24, reflecting a 25% increase compared to the previous year, according to the charity’s Annual Report.

The surge highlights the growing prevalence of gambling-related issues and the critical role GamCare plays in addressing these concerns.

Margot Daly, executive chair of GamCare’s board, explained: “Throughout a challenging year and with heightened demand for our services, GamCare’s staff have got on with the job of preventing harm where possible and treating harm where necessary.”

GamCare, which dropped its Safer Gambling Standard in November, reported that 74% of all Helpline interactions — equivalent to 41,070 calls or chats — were classified as supportive interventions. These interactions often served as the first step toward structured treatment, providing immediate advice and guidance.

For many individuals, the Helpline acts as a gateway to specialised services, enabling them to embark on tailored recovery journeys. Those completing treatment reported notable improvements, including reductions in gambling-related hardships and financial difficulties.

More than just a helpline

GamCare’s impact extends beyond its Helpline. In the past year, the charity facilitated over 9,100 free treatment sessions with an average time between referral and service delivery of 2.1 days.

This efficiency underscores the importance of seamless entry points to care for those seeking urgent support.

In its update, GamCare also highlighted a report by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities from March which emphasised the Helpline’s role, revealing that 57% of individuals receiving gambling harm treatment were referred through GamCare.

Additionally, the charity expanded its reach through targeted initiatives aimed at vulnerable groups, including young people, women, and individuals within the criminal justice system. Over 53,000 young people, children, and parents received educational resources.

At the same time, more than 10,000 professionals were trained to recognise signs of gambling harm and direct individuals toward appropriate support.

The Women’s Programme, in collaboration with other organisations, equipped nearly 4,000 professionals with the skills to identify and address gambling-related harm among women.

Founded in 1997, GamCare is a leading charity focused on minimising gambling-related harm across the UK. One of its main goals is to offer free, confidential support, advice, and treatment to individuals affected by problem gambling.

In addition, it provides education and training programmes to raise awareness and prevent harm. The organisation remains steadfast in its mission, even as the sector faces ongoing changes following the UK government’s white paper on gambling reform.
