Christmas travel in the Heartland

BENTON, Mo. (KFVS) – Tomorrow is Christmas, and millions of people are traveling for the holiday.

“Just fellowship, family fun, love, bowling, food, all of the good things that happened around the Christmas holidays,” said Kenny Holiday.

The “Holidays” are traveling for the holiday. Kenny Holiday, his wife Tanisha, and their two kids are among the more than 100 million people hitting the road this year, and for them, bowling is a Christmas staple.

“We will leave clothes and other luggage as long as we have our bowling balls in the car because that’s how important gathering around the tradition is to our family,” Tanisha said.

Rob Russell and his wife are doing some last-minute shopping before the holiday.

“You know Highway H coming down wasn’t too bad I imagine I-55 is a little bit busier this time of year,” Russell said.

He said they always pack their warm coats when traveling during this season.

“You never know what’s going to come, accidents occur on the highway and you know if we’re there to help somebody then that’s what we do,” he said.

The Norman family left Searcy, Arkansas for Sikeston late Monday night. Madeline said she can’t wait to see aunts, uncles, and cousins she rarely sees.

“Just seeing my family. You only see them once a year, so it’s nice,” Madeline said.

And Paige told Heartland News she’s ready for a special Christmas meal.

“Well, our family tradition for Christmas dinner is chicken gumbo and I’m looking forward to that chicken gumbo,” Paige said.

As for the “Holidays,” Tanisha offers this message to everyone celebrating Christmas.

“You never know when it’s going to be the last time that you get to spend with your loved ones and just one thing we live by is that a family that prays together stays together,” she said.
