Ho ho whoa: Christmas is over, but the holidays aren’t done with Wilmington quite yet

First of all, happy Boxing Day.

Second of all, I hope that you and yours had a lovely and memorable Christmas and that you got a gift or two you truly enjoyed. Even better, I hope you got someone else a gift that they truly enjoyed.

Finally, thanks for reading the Port City Life newsletter each week. Ideally, it’s been useful and entertaining and has helped inform you about Wilmington’s cultural scene.

This will be the last newsletter of 2024, but we’ll pick up right where we left off this time next week for the first newsletter of 2025. Onward!

Weekend weather outlook

Should be decent weather this weekend before the rain sets in on Saturday going into Sunday. Highs in the 60s, with lows only in the 50s.

Go | See | Do

The weekend between Christmas and New Year’s isn’t exactly the most happening one of the year, but even so, there are some fun Wilmington-area options to know about. For starters, an Emmy-nominated comic is coming to downtown’s top comedy club, you’ve got one last crack at holiday-themed events and there’s some top-notch local music as well.

If you’re looking ahead to New Year’s Eve, we’ve just published a big ol’ list of ideas, from fancy shows and shindigs to absolutely free festivals and concerts. Link to the full list is below.

The Dish with Port City Foodies

Food writer Allison Ballard looks back at nine buzzworthy restaurants and bars that opened in the Wilmington area in 2024. Plus, we talk to Wilmington’s “pancake king” who serves comfort food to the needy, and in case you missed it, don’t forget our annual story paying tribute to Wilmington’s traditional Christmas flounder.

Getting to know Arrow Ross

Longtime Wilmington artist Arrow Ross has turned his block of North Fifth Avenue into a fanciful sculptural wonderland. Read my profile about how the Denmark native is making downtown a little more fun and interesting.

News you can use

The Azalea Festival announced one of its concert headliners last week, and it’s a hip-hop star who’ll be coming to Wilmington in April.

Plus, we’ve got a look at what’s coming down the pike in 2025 in terms of a future replacement of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, and Wilmington is getting yet another gas station/convenience store combo.
