Millions hit the road this holiday season

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – As the holiday season winds down, an estimated 1.5 million Kentuckians are traveling for the holidays, with 93% of them opting to drive, according to AAA. The organization predicts Dec. 26 and 27 to be among the busiest travel days of the year.

Lori Weaver Hawkins with AAA advises drivers to plan ahead to minimize stress during the post-holiday rush.

“If you can get on the roadway early in the day, that’s your best bet for avoiding the worst of the traffic,” said Hawkins. “Regardless, leave plenty of time and expect delays depending on where you’re traveling back from. Always pack your patience because those roadways are going to be busy.”

Matt West is traveling from Kentucky to North Carolina. He shared his strategy for avoiding major traffic.

“We chose this route because it avoids the main interstates but still has a major throughway,” West explained. “Also, in West Virginia, there are a lot of tolls. I’d rather spend that money on snacks and more fun for us.”

Hawkins emphasizes that preparation is crucial for a safe trip, especially during the busy holiday travel period.

“Tires are always an issue,” she said. “Make sure you have adequate tread and proper pressure before heading out. It not only keeps you safer on the roadways, but also helps you get the most out of every gallon of gas.”

With many drivers traveling with family, distractions are another concern.

“Kids are likely still excited about their Christmas gifts and the family gatherings,” Hawkins explained. “That energy can lead to a lot of conversations and distractions in the car, so keep your mind and eyes focused on the roadway.”

Finally, Hawkins recommends setting up navigation, climate controls, and entertainment before starting the drive to avoid additional distractions.

With proper preparation, Kentuckians can enjoy a safe journey home and start the new year on the right foot.
