A look back at Woodward-Granger’s sports highlights in 2024

To wrap up the 2024 season, the Perry Chief takes a moment to highlight some of the biggest accomplishments for Woodward-Granger (all listed items are unranked).

Talan Fuson, football team puts the state on notice

Breaking through this year to earn a home game in the second round behind the team’s highest win total since 2012, the Hawks had one of the most electric offenses this season.

Providing a spark since taking over at quarterback midseason as a sophomore, Talan Fuson took a big leap in 2024 under center where he scored 37 touchdowns. Even with the extra games that 16 other teams had in the playoffs, he still ranked second in overall touchdowns. Completing over 64 percent of his throws, Fuson tossed 24 touchdowns and added 13 more on the ground to help diversify the high-flying attack. That helped the Hawks have two top-10 receivers with Kane Mahler-Moreno ranked second with 11 touchdowns and Max Dalton ranked 10th with eight grabs.

First-year coach helps lead volleyball team to new high

It was a homecoming moment for the Hawks this season with alum Katelyn Bandstra grabbing the clipboard this season, and with a young team in front of her, helped the Hawks increase their win total for the third season in a row as the team finished with a 17-19 record.

Not since Bandstra’s final season as a player in 2020 had the Hawks had a better record. And it didn’t happen overnight, as the team started with a 2-8 record. It took winning 15 of the final 26 matches to climb as high as they did.

Young track team makes a mark at state meet

The Hawks made an exciting turn in 2024, bringing seven girls to the state track meet, taking part in six events.

And out of that group, Woodward-Granger ended up on the scoreboard thanks to Alaysia McCord capping her career with a third-place finish in the high jump. But crucially, McCord was the only senior in that group that descended upon Drake Stadium, as the sprint relay team of Hayden Thomas, Charissa Klocke, Riley McCaulley and Eva Fleshner are all able to come back for 2025 — as is thrower Lauren Rodgers and distance runner Zoey Osmundson.

Addie Lego breaks record in promising new basketball season

It’s a young season but there’s plenty of reason to be excited for the Hawks this year, and even before a 60-7 win over Ogden on Dec. 20, Addie Lego is one of those reasons that has helped the team start out with a 6-3 record.

In a night where she could do no wrong, Lego scored a program record 36 points in a 75-47 win over Glidden-Ralston. Making over half of her shots for the night, Lego’s high mark is the sixth-most scored throughout the state to start the 2024-25 season.

Girls wrestling wins WCAC second year in a row

Hannah Brandhorst, Katelyn Brandhorst and Lauren Rodgers all made it to the 2024 state meet. Now they’re back for another go-around and have the Hawks in good form.

On Dec. 19, the Hawks won the West Central Activities Conference crown for the second year in a row, with Hannah Brandhorst along with Rodgers each scoring first place prizes (Katelyn has been active this year but was not able to participate in the conference meet).

But they were hardly alone, as four more teammates won gold between Grace Sharr, Kristyn Crouse, Sunshine Casey and Jessa Claussen.
