UT Recognized as a Tennessee Veteran Ready Business

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has been recognized as a 2025 Veteran Ready Business by the Tennessee Department of Veteran Services. The award celebrates organizations in Tennessee that excel in recruiting, hiring and retaining service members, military veterans and their families.

The university received a bronze certification. The recognition underscores UT’s commitment to acknowledging military service in hiring practices, providing support for veterans transitioning into the workforce, and fostering a culture that honors the service and sacrifices of veterans.

“It’s an incredible honor to accept this award on behalf of the university’s Office of Human Resources, recognizing our commitment and efforts in support of UT’s veteran community,” said Recruitment Manager Chelsey Byrd. “Their dedication, resilience and leadership enrich our workplace, and we are proud to create opportunities where they can thrive.”

In October 2024, UT endorsed a statement of support, pledging compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act and equipping managers with tools to effectively manage employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

Byrd emphasized that hiring veterans aligns with the university’s mission, vision and values. She noted that veterans enhance workforce diversity by bringing valuable life skills, experiences and educational backgrounds.

Currently more than 370 faculty and staff members at UT are military veterans. In the fall 2024 semester alone, more than 1,400 student veterans and military-connected students joined the university. Additionally, UT boasts more than 6,400 alumni who have served.

In the 2024 U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges, UT ranked 51st among public institutions and 70th nationally as a best college for veterans. Recently the Division of Student Success announced the establishment of the Office of Veteran Benefits Administration in response to significant growth in the number of veterans and military-connected students on campus. Veterans, active military and ROTC cadets attend the university at the in-state tuition rate.

Launched in July 2024, the Tennessee Veteran Ready Business program aims to honor veteran service and connect Tennessee employers with highly skilled individuals to drive economic opportunity across the state.
