UNLV engineering students showcase senior designs to solve real-world challenges

The next generation of engineers is ready to solve real-world challenges.

Engineering students at UNLV showcased their skills at the Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition on Thursday.

Over 180 students across 38 teams presented their technology advancement ideas to a panel of industry judges.

Judges awarded winners based on innovation, commercial potential, presentation quality, and sustainability.

“This is a time they can really apply what they learned in the classrooms in a real-world open-ended project.and so they do all the calculations, they do simulations, they do some market research and they have a working prototype by the end that they get to show off to faculty, judges and their peers,” said Melissa Morris, Associate Professor at the UNLV Mechanical Engineering Department.

Some students also chose to localize their designs, focusing on projects centered around Brightline West and the Formula 1 pedestrian bridge.
