Belize asks its citizens to take precautions when visiting Chetumal
As a crime wave hits Chetumal, the authorities of that country alert their people to avoid visiting the state capital of Quintana Roo.
The Belizean authorities issued a notice to their citizens to take precautions during their visits to Chetumal, following the recent incidents of insecurity that have been recorded.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Belize, through its official channels on social networks, recognized that the Mexican authorities are taking actions to guarantee peace in the southern part of the State, however, it cited that it is necessary to preventively Take special care when crossing the border between both countries.
“The Government of Belize is monitoring the recent increase in violent crime in Chetumal, and advises Belizeans to use caution when crossing the northern border and visiting Chetumal. “We recognize that Mexican authorities have taken steps to address the issue, and our authorities will continue to engage with Mexican counterparts on this matter”; the statement says.
It was mentioned that so far there is no report of any Belizean citizen who has suffered an attack on Mexican soil. It was also detailed that there are no indications that the cartels that, according to the State Attorney General’s Office, “are fighting for control of the area,” have any interest in them.
Ever since Morena took office in the Quintana Roo State Government, the crime index has skyrocketed in the region.
