Fairmont girls golf team takes 2nd in New Ulm

NEW ULM — The Fairmont girls golf team placed second out of six teams at a Big South Conference East Division girls golf meet at New Ulm Country Club.

BEA finished on top with a 359, followed by Fairmont (291), Waseca (414), St. Peter (432), New Ulm (479) and Jackson County Central (520).

BEA’s Payten Gudahl was the medalist with an 83, followed by BEA’s Rylan Storbec (86), Fairmont’s Brynn Gustafson (87), BEA’s Katelyn Storbeck (98) and Waseca’s Emma Kieth (93). There was a three-way tie for sixth between BEA’s Madison Ehrich and Fairmont’s Carly Gustafson and Leslie Zarling, who all scored 101. Fairmont’s fourth top scorer was Katherine Zelaya, who tied for ninth with a 102.

BEA plays at a Big South Conference invitational at Fairmont on Tuesday.

BOYS GOLF

Fairmont boys take 5th at JCC

JACKSON — The Fairmont boys golf team placed fifth out of six teams at a Big South Conference East Division boys golf meet on Monday.

St. Peter won with a 320, followed by New Ulm (342), Blue Earth Area (345), Jackson County Central (346), Fairmont (355) and Waseca (364).

St. Peter’s Kaiden Brovold was the medalist with a 76, while his teammate Anthony Nicolai took second (78) and New Ulm’s Will Fossen placed third (80). Fairmont’s top golfer was Mathew Cone, who shot an 84 to tie for eighth. Fairmont also saw Harmon Schrunk shoot an 86 to tie for 10th, while Macklain Anderson carded an 88 to tie for 16th and Hudson Mckean shot a 97 to take 31st.

BEA’s Eli Blagg carded an 82 to tie for fourth, while Jackson Blondin shot an 88 to tie for 16th, Manny Granillo shot an 89 to tie for 21st and Hunter Viland shot a 91 to take 23rd. BEA plays at a Big South Conference invitational at Fairmont on Tuesday.

PREP SOFTBALL

LCWM 6, Fairmont 1

FAIRMONT — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, the No. 2 ranked team in Class AA, kept Fairmont at bay Monday in a nonconference softball game with a 6-1 win.

In what was a pitchers’ duel through the first four innings between LCWM’s Avery Voges and Fairmont’s Nevaeh Rahm, the Knights broke the scoreless tie with a run in the fourth for a 1-0 lead. LCWM got a pair of doubles in the fifth to score three and three singles in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.

After a leadoff single by Gabby Leiding, Brylee Miller drove her in with a single to get the Cardinals on the board in the bottom of the seventh. That was all the Cardinals could put together in the runs column as the Knights hung on. That run scored was the first earned run allowed by Voges all season.

Rahm pitched six innings in the loss, allowing six runs on 11 hits and five walks while striking out two. Leiding pitched the seventh and struck out the side.

Miller led the Cardinals with a pair of doubles, while Rahm had two singles.

Fairmont (8-9) is at Worthington Tuesday for Big South Conference action.

PREP TENNIS

Litchfield 6, Fairmont 1

LITCHFIELD — Litchfield topped Fairmont 6-1 on Monday in a nonconference spring tennis meet.

Anthony Stegge had Fairmont’s lone win of the day, defeating Tommy Witrock 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. At No. 1 singles, Lincoln Dille defeated Dominic Lund-May 6-1, 6-1, while Mathias Bruning defeated Tyler Slama 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Jordan Turner beat Wylee Frederiksen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Josh Blomberg and Alex Nelson defeated Oliver Thedens and Sebastian Castro 6-1, 6-0, while Isaac Elwell and Matt Defries defeated Zachary Ashland and Reed Wagner 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Zach Mulchow and Jacob Klinghagen defeated Lillian Ortega and Simone Castro 6-1, 6-4.

PREP SOFTBALL

Cathedral 17,

Fairmont 8

Fairmont 2, Minneota 1

WINDOM — Fairmont went 1-1 at a Windom softball tournament on Saturday.

In a 17-8 loss to New Ulm Cathedral, Brylee Miller had a homer and a single to lead Fairmont, while Nevaeh Rahm added two hits. Rahm pitched three innings and gave up nine runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Gabby Leiding pitched the final four innings and gave up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits.

In the win over Minneota, Miller got the win in five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks while fanning nine. Rahm pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four. Miller led the team with a double and a single.

LATE FRIDAY

JCC 6, Fairmont 2

FAIRMONT — Jackson County Central rallied by Fairmont for a 6-2 win in a nonconference softball game Friday.

Brylee Miller pitched the complete game for Fairmont in defeat, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk while fanning seven. Miller had a homer to lead the Cardinals, while Rahm had an RBI double.
