Pickens County remembers POW camp during World War ll

PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A major part of American history came alive in Pickens County.

Organizers reenacted the POW camp during World War ll when German POWs were held in Aliceville. Over the weekend, more than 40 reenactors from Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana and Alabama played the roles of American military men and POWs. During the height of World War ll, Camp Aliceville stood as one of the largest POW prison camps in the country.

Some 6,000 German POWs were held at Camp Aliceville during the war.
