Two arrested in attempted theft from Portage storm-damaged business, police say
PORTAGE, Mich. — Two people were arrested late Wednesday after police say they attempted to steal from a business impacted by Tuesday’s storm, according to Portage Public Safety.
Officers were called to the business on West Centre Avenue around 9:30 p.m.
When they arrived, officers stopped two individuals and confirmed they had not only been inside the building, but had taken items from the store, according to public safety officers.
As of Thursday, an 18-year-old Galesburg man remains in Kalamazoo County Jail.
A charge of breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny against the 18-year-old was also submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review, officers said.
The second suspect, a Kalamazoo juvenile, was turned over to her parents.
Charges against the juvenile were also submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review, according to the department.
Portage Department of Public Safety officers will be providing extra patrol attention to areas of the city affected by Tuesday’s storm.
