Two new MHSAA sports to debut in 2025-26 school year

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Big changes are coming to high school sports in Michigan as the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has approved the addition of two new sports that will be added starting in the 2025-26 school year. The Representative Council of the MHSAA approved adding boys volleyball and girls field hockey to the list of MHSAA-sponsored tournament sports.

Girls field hockey will be played in the fall season while boys volleyball will be played in the spring. When the two sports are added in 2025, they will be the first sports added to the MHSAA lineup since the 2004-05 school year when the MHSAA added boys and girls lacrosse.

The council also approved reorganizing the winter sports championships calendar to end a week earlier. To view a breakdown of the new championship calendar for winter sports and other changes coming to high school sports you can read the full MHSAA release here.
