Chico’s ‘Mother May I’ sip and shop celebrates local businesses this Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and while you’re shopping for your loved ones this holiday, why not shop local?

Sip & Shops at the Lassen Traditional Cidery have become a holiday staple in Chico, Saturday’s ‘Mother May I’ centered around Mother’s Day.

“We try to do a couple of annual events every year, so it usually correlates with a holiday like Valentine’s Day, or today it’s ‘Mother May I’ sip and shop for Mother’s Day,” said Samantha Zangrilli, one of the organizers of Your Local Marketplace pop-ups.

The ‘Mother May I’ sip and shop hosted around 30 local vendors, featuring jewelry and clothing businesses to food, flowers, and more. The event aligned with the Mother’s Day holiday for the community to stop by and shop for their loved ones.

The Lassen Traditional Cidery also had ciders and juices available for people to sip while they shop, or buy bottles as a special gift. Ben Nielson, Owner of the Lassen Traditional Cidery prides his business in using locally grown fruits and orchards to make his ciders, barrel aging them in Chico, making himself a local business supporting other local businesses.

“It’s great to get her (Zangrilli’s) help bringing a bunch of people here into the cidery while everyone is having a good time. [We have] some beautiful art, jewelry, clothing, and good cider,’ said Neilson.

What exactly is the impact of shoppers this holiday? The National Retail Federation’s 2024 survey expects over $33 billion will be spent this Mother’s Day. They report this is the second highest finding in the survey’s history.

Zangrilli says many of these dollars could be pumped back into the local community by shopping local this holiday.

“It’s always important to shop local wherever you live because when you spend $100, 60 of it stays in your local community and something like that can really help a small business get them to the next level. We create these opportunities in Chico so that we can help grow our local economy, help grow our local community and really show off what Chico has to offer,” explained Zangrilli.

Some vendors in attendance are mothers themselves, the impact of shopping local businesses helping families this Mother’s Day.

“It’s a great way to showcase all of the talent that we have in Chico and have a glass of Cider in hand,” concluded Zangrilli.

The Lassen Traditional Cidery is located at 643 Entler Ave Suite 52 in Chico. Zangrilli and Nielson hope to host the next sip & shop in August. For more on the pop-ups, click here.
