Rapper Childish Gambino’s New World Tour is heading to New Orleans in September

The on-again, off-again career of rapper Childish Gambino, the hip-hop alter ego of actor Donald Glover, is back on again in a big way. 

On Monday, Gambino announced an extensive tour, dubbed the New World Tour, that includes a Sept. 7 stop at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The designated opening act is Willow, aka Willow Smith.

Tickets go on sale May 17 via AXS.com, the ticketing platform associated with the tour’s promoter, AEG Presents. 

In addition to the tour news, Gambino dropped “ATAVISTA,” which is described as the “finished version” of his 2020 album “3.15.20.” It contains two new songs, the title track and “Human Sacrifice.” A video for the song “Little Foot Big Foot” was also released on Monday. 

All in all, it’s a lot of activity for a hip-hop artist who has announced and rescinded his own retirement.

The tour kicks off Aug. 11 in Oklahoma and encompasses more than 50 dates in North America, Europe and, in early 2025, New Zealand and Australia. 

Gambino/Glover started off his entertainment career as a writer on Tina Fey’s sitcom “30 Rock.” He went on to co-star as Troy Barnes in the sitcom “Community.” He then created and starred in the award-winning FX series “Atlanta.” He is a co-creator of the Amazon Prime series “Swarm.” He voiced the adult Simba in the 2019 remake of “The Lion King.” He also played a young Lando Calrissian in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and is set to star in the forthcoming Lucasfilm movie “Lando.”

He co-created and co-stars in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” an Amazon Prime series based on the 2005 of the same name that premiered in early 2024.

His concurrent music career has created a whole other fanbase, one that closely follows the comings and goings of his musical ambitions.

Gambino launched himself to the top of hip-hop’s hierarchy with the 2018 release of the politicized single and video “This Is America.” 

He was scheduled to headline the 2018 Voodoo Music Experience in City Park, only to cancel less than 48 hours before show time, citing the lingering effects of a broken foot. Voodoo replaced him with Travis Scott.
