HHSAA postpones state softball semifinals to Friday due to heavy rains

HONOLULU — Amid a persistent rainstorm, the HHSAA postponed Thursday’s softball semifinals at the University of Hawaii’s Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Four games – two in Division I and two in Division II – are now planned to be made up on Friday at times to be determined.

The HHSAA still must make up two quarterfinal games that were postponed due to heavy rain Wednesday night. The Division I matchup between Mililani and Kalani is set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Campbell High and the last Division II quarterfinal between Kapaa and Kohala is set for 1 p.m. at Moanalua, weather permitting.

In the completed Division I quarterfinals played at RWSS on Wednesday, defending champion Campbell routed BIIF champ Kealakehe, 16-1 in five innings; MIL champ Baldwin edged Kapolei, 12-11; and Kamehameha thumped Leilehua, 13-3 in five innings.

Kamehameha will face Baldwin in one of the semifinals. Campbell awaits the Mililani-Kalani winner in the other, although OIA champ Mililani led Kalani 12-0 with the first inning not yet completed at the time the game was suspended.

In Division II, Waimea and Pac-Five are through to one semifinal and Aiea awaits the Kapaa-Kohala winner in the other.

Kamehameha coach Mark Lyman said after Wednesday’s win that his players have so far navigated the uncertain scheduling.

“We had the girls locked in,” he said. “We work on hitting a lot and they were ready for it. We had a little bit of a delay, so they were champing at the bit and they were ready to go.”

As of 10 a.m. Thursday, there was no announced change for the HHSAA Division I baseball semifinals to be played at Les Murakami Stadium at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
