6 Summer Fashion Trends to Try This Season

It may seem like summer fashion trends are the same rotation of seasonal staples; bikinis, tank tops, and denim cutoffs surely come to mind. Summer style certainly skews toward a blank canvas of outfit formulas—a white tank top and blue denim shorts, or a crisp white shirt dress are the classic, trustworthy essentials of the season. And while these staples are must-haves for beach days and sweltering city days, the summer is also a good time to experiment with the season’s biggest trends.

Whether it’s a trendy accessory or a renewed take on casual bottoms, summer fashion trends are mixing everything from nostalgia to prep, giving us all a wide range of options to go for this season. Take, for example, the prep comeback seen on the runways of Miu Miu and Dries van Noten, which saw polo shirts take center stage a la late 2000s; or the return of capri pants, a polarizing nostalgia trend that was featured on the Tory Burch and Coperni runways.

Before you stock your summer wardrobe, take a look at the season’s biggest runway trends, so you can pull them off in real life as the warmer months kick off.

The classic summer white dress is having a moment. Featured on the runways of brands like Christopher Esber and Acne Studios, this season’s white dress is turning more structural and crisp than ever before with tailoring and shirting elements that make it a true on-the-go piece. Still, a white dress is really just that: a white canvas. So, for styling, opt for contrasting accessories in black or red that add a pop of edge to an otherwise breezy look.

Nostalgic trends don’t seem to slow down in the 2020s. Capris—the love-to-hate awkward-length bottoms of the late 2000s—are just the latest one to take over fashion. Designers like Ferragamo and Tory Burch bet big on the style this season with sleek and elevated takes on capris that can take anyone from the park to the office, as well as casual versions that border on activewear. For optimal wear throughout the summer, it’s best to keep the styling minimal—after all, capris are a lot to digest—with slingback mid-heel pumps and a simple T-shirt or fitted blazer.

A signature of sportswear, the polo shirt is this summer’s must-have top, thanks to brands like Miu Miu and Loewe. Oversized striped versions with flower embellishments, ombre details, and logo-heavy takes on the style the versatility of this classic staple that’s somehow taking on a new life. The styling is also just as varied: designers showed their iterations paired with everything from wide-leg trousers to barely-there hot pants and bubble-hem skirts.

This year’s fashion trends are taking a turn for the ultra-feminine. And when it comes to footwear, it’s all about slingback shoes. While the classic ‘90s style certainly gives workwear vibes, it’s also a top-tier summer style. Take a pair of slingback flats, for example, which can be paired with anything from a maxi dress to a beach cover-up or slingback platforms, which are great for party nights.

Brands like Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton have bet on this style, featuring elegant and oversized versions that can be paired with anything from denim to a suit. The former is perhaps the best match for a cowboy hat this summer through a double-denim outfit in oversized silhouettes that plays into the rider cosplay of this trend.

Raffia handbags have long been a staple of summer fashion, especially when it comes to beach days. But this year, designers are also making them fitting for on-the-go city days with elevated picnic-approved handbags that are part oversized tote, part oceanside carry-all. Take Bottega Veneta, for example, which showed large tote handle versions of their signature Intrecciato handbags with spillover shirts and trinkets that showed just how errand-proof these styles can be.
