Jeffers’ Mia Nordstrom prepares to stick her landing during the long jump at the Houghton County Invite track meet in Calumet on Thursday, May 9. Nordstrom and her teammates finished third at the Division 2 regional meet in Ishpeming Thursday.

ISHPEMING — It was a tough day for Copper Country track and field teams here on a rainy Thursday as they finished well behind the leaders in a Division 2 regional meet.

The West Iron County girls edged the host Hematites 55-54 for the title. They were followed by Ironwood 38, Hancock 28 and Jeffers 8.Ishpeming boys won with 89 points, followed by Ironwood 55, Hancock 18, Jeffers 7 and West Iron 3.Hancock junior Addison Pizzi won the 100-meter hurdles in 18.79 seconds and helped the Bulldogs place second in the 400 relay (56.47).

“I started a little slow in the hurdles, then our coaches yelled and told me to do what we did in practice,” she said. “I’m very happy with the 4×100 relay. This was pretty good practice for the U.P. Finals. Our handoffs were really good.”

The Bulldogs did the bulk of their scoring in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

“Addison got a PB (personal-best) in the hurdles which is good for her,” Hancock coach Jenn Smith said. “We did a pretty good job in the distances and middle distances where we scored a lot of points and did well in the 400 relay.”

Hancock junior Ella Keranen was runner-up to Ishpeming senior Lola Korpi in the 1600 (5:49.14) and 3200 (13:28.31) and fourth in the 800 (2:47.57).Senior Brielle Kero took second in the 800 (2:35.38) with sophomore Jayna Keranen fourth in the 1600 (6:03.69).Bulldogs’ junior Rayna Towles placed third in the 3200 (14:00.66) and sophomore Jill Berg was fourth (14:15.79).

Jeffers sophomore Mia Nordstrom was second in long jump (14-4½) and freshman Brielle Anderson took third (13-2).The Hancock boys got their lone first on senior Myles Lewis’s toss of 44-7 in shot put and sophomore Curtis Archambeau took second in the 3200 (12:41.67).

“We got disqualified in the 800 relay, then we corrected our mistake and qualified in the 400,” Smith said. “Our handoffs were much better in the 400.”

Jeffers sophomore Landon Larson placed second in the 400 (56.32), third in long jump (16-4) and fourth in the 200 (26.52).West Iron senior Danica Shamion and Ishpeming senior Lola Korpi won four events apiece.

Shamion took the 100 (13.64), 200 (28.97) in a driving rain, 400 (59.95) and high jump (4-6).

“I’m happy with my 400,” Shamion said. “I had been running 1:01 and 1:02 which wasn’t what I wanted. This gets me a step closer to my goal (in the 56s). The rain made it hard to see on the turns in the 200. I’m just glad we got this one in. We didn’t want to have to come back here just to finish it up.”

Lola Korpi was clocked at 2:33.18 in the 800, 5:40.23 (1600) and 12:28.98 (3200), just three days after winning the 800 in a personal-best 2:25.95 in the Marquette County meet at Ishpeming Westwood. She also anchored the winning 3200 relay. Her sister, Laynie, earned her first individual victory in the 1600 at Westwood (6:24.76).On Thursday, Laynie won the 300 hurdles for the first time with a season-best 56.77 and anchored the winning 1600 relay (4:47.48) which edged West Iron in a photo finish “It was pretty exciting to win the hurdles,” she said. “I alternated my legs to avoid stutter-stepping. This is definitely a confidence boost. I fell during a race last year and was a little intimidated until today. My coach told me to look over and not at the hurdles.”

Lola was also happy with how this day went, despite the Hematites coming up a point short to the Wykons.

“I’m so happy for Laynie,” she said. “That was awesome. I felt pretty good today, but running the 3200 is always hard after running two miles before it. I wasn’t really running for time. I just wanted to qualify for the Finals.”

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the U.P. Finals at Kingsford June 1.
