City council voting on new license for Springfield’s new shopping center
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Springfield’s city council is voting on a new license for the city’s latest shopping development being built where the Eastfield Mall used to stand.
It could be good news for drivers in the area, you could say there’s a possibility for a pump at Springfield crossing.
City officials are considering a license to keep, store, use, and sell petroleum and its products, but it can’t exceed 70,000 gallons, it leads you to think about a gas station right.
According to the council’s agenda and the license petition by the company behind this development, Onyx, they’re expected to use the tanks which will be stored above and underground for a retail store and gas station.
This isn’t the first announcement about what’s to come at Springfield crossing which is set to open in the summer of next year.
Last week, Western Mass News shared about national retailers like Hobby Lobby, Ulta Beauty, Pet Smart and a Five Below setting up shop.
Just before Monday night’s meeting, we caught up with City Councilor Zaida Govan about this latest addition. She said she’s good with the gas.
“That’s always been in the plans; when we initially got the drawings of it, so I’m excited to have another gas station, I just hoping the prices won’t be as high,” said Councilor Govan. “Of course, they’re competitive. Maybe if they’re one of those gas stations attached to it like Big Y or BJs or something like that would be good because the prices could go down if you have a membership. Well the community is very excited for the mall to be back up and be back online and go out there. They’re talking about the stores they want like Bath and Body Works and Target, Homegoods, so that’s what the community wants.”
There’s still a lot of rumblings about what anchor stores could be making their way to our area next summer.
