Memorial Day weekend 2024 could break record for amount of Americans traveling

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Around 43.8 million Americans are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend. That is 4% more than the amount of people who traveled in 2023.

The record for Memorial Day travel was set back in 2005 at 44 million Americans.

“So we’re gonna be very close to that. We could actually break it. But it’s gonna be the busiest one we’ve had in a long time,” said Clay Ingram with AAA Alabama.

The amount of traveling happening over the weekend is a good sign for summer travel. Ingram said it’s possible 2024 will be the busiest travel year of all time.

Air travel is up by 5%, but 90% of travelers will reach their destination by car. Ingram suggests before you leave, have your car looked at by a mechanic to avoid any problems that could be prevented.

“If you don’t have time to do that, at least check as many of those things as possible yourself. Checking fluid levels, wiper blades, tire pressure is not that difficult,” said Ingram.

Right now, the average gas price in Alabama is $3.23. That is four cents cheaper than last month. It’s unusual to see prices dip before Memorial Day, but a good sign for travelers.
