Tuesday’s high school sports: Spartans win 5 events at 4D track championship

The Salem High School boys track and field team won five events and finished as the Region 4D runner-up Tuesday at George Washington High School in Danville.

For the Spartans, sophomore Nazeser Miller won the 400-meter dash (50.60 seconds), Mitchell Taylor won both the 110 hurdles (14.66) and 300 hurdles (40.01), the relay team of Justice English, Khamari Garner, Aedon Wiley and Josiah Persinger won the 4×100 (42.38) and the relay team of Ruimel Nugent, Davon Jones, Taylor and Miller won the 4×400 (3 minutes, 27.35 seconds).

Jefferson Forest’s Alex Jordan won the 1,600 (4:19.24).

Indians 2nd at Region 1D meet

Rural Retreat won a pair of events and finished second at the Region 1D championship at Eastside High School in Coeburn. 

Trey Ward won the 400 (53.82), and the Indians won the 4×100 relay (44.94).

Rural Retreat finished with 68.5 points, 79.5 shy of team champion Patrick Henry-Glade Spring.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Bruins win 5 events at 4D meet

The Blacksburg girls won five individual events at the Region 4D championship at George Washington High School in Danville.

Mia Littlejohn won the 100 hurdles (14.67) and high jump (5 feet, 2 inches), Kionna Grubb won the 300 hurdles (44.37), Layla Boyle won the pole vault (9 feet, 3 inches) and the Bruins won the 4×400 relay (4:02.93).

Jefferson Forest’s Zoie Lamanna won both the 800 (2:11.19) and the 3,200 (11:03.69).

Somervell claims 3 titles at 1D meet

Chilhowie senior Tess Somervell won three individual events at the Region 1D championship at Eastside High School in Coeburn. 

Somervell won the 1,600 (5:51.52), 400 (1:03.24) and pole vault (9 feet). The Warriors also won the 4×800 relay (11:44.98).

Chilhowie finished third in the team standings with 68 points, 25 behind region champion Eastside.

BOYS LACROSSE

E.C. Glass 16, Jefferson Forest 3

The No. 3 Cavaliers fell behind by five goals in the opening period and lost to the No. 2 Hilltoppers in the Region 4D semifinals in Lynchburg.

Danny Nguyen, Thax Rowland and Robert Vossen scored for Jefferson Forest (9-6).

E.C. Glass (12-3) will travel to No. 1 Salem (16-0) for the Region 4D championship on Friday night.

GIRLS SOCCER

Auburn 6, George Wythe 0

Katie Light scored four goals as the Eagles blanked the Maroons to win the Mountain Empire District tournament championship.

Kennedy Marshall recorded the clean sheet in net for Auburn (15-4-0).

George Wythe fell to 9-6-1.

Giles 8, Galax 1

Kerrigan Mitcham recorded a double hat trick, netting six goals as the Spartans blasted the Maroon Tide in the Mountain Empire District third-place game.

Giles improved to 10-5-1.

Lupita Munoz scored the lone goal for Galax (6-12-0).

Bland County 2, Fort Chiswell 1

Juliet Yoder notched the go-ahead goal as the Bears edged the Pioneers in the Mountain Empire District fifth-place game.

Ella Miller also scored for Bland County (4-11-1).

Aurora Haywood tallied a goal for Fort Chiswell (0-15-0).

BOYS TENNIS

Perez wins region title

Salem sophomore Drew Perez won the Region 4D individual championship, defeating Charlottesville’s Sean Frank 6-3, 6-4 in the title match.

Perez advanced to the state tournament, set to take place June 7-8 in Newport News.

GIRLS TENNIS

Glenvar tandem reaches 2C semis

Glenvar’s senior-freshman tandem of Natalie McMahon and Rebecca Magruder advanced to the semifinals of the Region 2C doubles tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Emma Craig and Claire Price of Nelson County at Radford University.

The Highlander duo will face Three Rivers District rivals Lydia Pratt and Claire Fender of Radford on Thursday morning for a spot in the region championship later in the day. Pratt and Fender won their quarterfinal match via forfeit.

Floyd County’s Elayna Harris and Madison Slusher also reached the 2C semifinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Patrick County.
