JUCO World Series runs on volunteer power

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Most of the work behind the scenes in getting ready for one of the biggest events in Grand Junction isn’t done by salaried employees, but by volunteers.

Everything from hanging signs, to getting the field ready and even rubbing up the baseballs the players will use is done with the help of a big group of volunteers.

One of those volunteers, Darren Starr, says that helping out is a way for him to give back to the game that gave him so much.

“I owe the game of baseball,” said Starr. “It was so good to me, helped educate me, and it was good to me, so anything that I can do to give back to the game of baseball, I’m willing to do.”

The volunteer work won’t stop when the first pitch is thrown though, as crowd ushers are also volunteers.

Since a lot of the work runs through volunteers, JUCO is always in need of help.

“It’s a huge boost to the economy here in Grand Junction,” said Starr. “It’s been around for years, it effects a lot of families and kids, and so i think it’s real important that if you get an opportunity to give back, and what a great program to be able to give back to.”
