Out & About: Area entertainment and cultural events starting Thursday, May 23

The Virginia Foothills Quilters Guild meets the first Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Piedmont Arts.

The Chix with Stix knitters meet at 10:30 a.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Piedmont Arts to work on their individual projects. The public is invited. The cost is $5.

A crochet group meets from 10 a.m. to noon each Thursday at the Collinsville Library; join them for free.

Come enjoy a night of comedy at Scuffle Hill Brewing in Collinsville, showcasing some of the funniest local comics. Second Thursday of the month from 8-11 p.m.

The Cascade School Community Center and Dance is held Fridays, from 7-9:30 p.m., at the old school at 3561 Huntington Trail, Cascade, and admission is $8.

Bassett Cruise In, held at the Bassett Furniture World Headquarters on Fairy Stone Park Highway in Bassett from 3-7 p.m. June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21 and Oct. 19. All makes and models are welcome. Free admission, 50/50 drawing, and a food court will be available.

RoosterWalk 14 at Pop’s Farm in Martinsville, beginning today through Sunday. This year’s headliner is Emmylou Harris.

Dominion Valley Music Fest, Dominion Valley Park, Stuart, Friday through Sunday. Take in some of the Blue Ridge Mountains’ best performances of this unique American art form that gave rise to jazz, blues, R&B, and rock & roll. This annual gospel music festival will showcase performance of all styles of Gospel, Christian and uplifting music by local and regional artists.

Inaugural Highland Golf and Wine Classic, a celebration of exceptional golf, wine, and epicurean experiences in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this weekend at Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan. The weekend will feature a series of exceptional culinary and tournament-style golf on the award-winning Highland Course.

42nd Annual Beach Music Festival, June 6-8 at Wayside Park in Stuart. This year’s lineup includes the Special Occasion Band, The Pizazz Band, Band of Ox, The Catalinas, Jim Quick and Coastline, and EnVision.

“Sounds on the Square” concert series on the beautiful Plaza of the Historic Henry County Courthouse, 6-10 p.m., Admission is free, food truck on-site along with Scuffle Hill Brewing. June 7: Barefoot Modern, July 5: The League of Ordinary Gentlemen, Aug. 2: Forrest Taylor, Sept. 6: The Ghosts of Liberty, Sept. 13: Line-Dancing on the Square, Oct. 4: Andy Burnette Trio.

Bushels and Barrels, Reynolds Homestead, June 14, 6:30-10 p.m. and June 15, 4-10 p.m. This two-day event celebrates all things local and kicks off with the marquee local food farm-to-table dinner with canapés and beverages, followed by a multi-course dinner locally sources and prepared by Pickle & Ash chefs. Attendees will be serenaded by the jazz ensemble 4 Brothers. On Saturday the festival features a home-brew competition and vendors offering local craft beers and wine. Breweries on tap will include a variety of Virginia and North Carolina based breweries.

Old fashioned Fourth of July celebration, DeHart Park, Stuart, July 4. Don your red, white and blue finest and head over to one of Patrick County’s most beloved annual traditions. This event offers a full day of family-friendly activities, free games, love entertainment, and one of the best fireworks displays in the region.

Front Porch Fest, Aug. 29-Sept. 1, Stuart. Celebrate this event’s 15th year of live music, children’s activities, yoga, and campsite jams. More than 30 bands ranging from hometown talent to nationally touring acts will perform over the four-day festival. The backdrop for this event is Spirithaven Farm, located on 130 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Stuart.

Dominion Valley Music Fest, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, Dominion Valley Park, Stuart. This event, held on Labor Day Weekend, is a gospel music festival showcasing all styles of Gospel, Christian and uplifting music by local and regional artists.

Henry County Fair Concerts lineup for Sept. 25-27 at the Martinsville Speedway includes The Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band “Key West” on Sept. 25, Jack and Davis Reid on Sept. 26, and Jordan Feliz on Sept. 27.

The city of Martinsville 2024 Reservoir Bass Tournament schedule is June 15, 6 p.m.-12 a.m.; July 13, 6 p.m.-12 a.m.; Aug. 17, 6 p.m.-12 a.m.; Sept. 14, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. $50 goes to the winning team. On Oct. 12 the event will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. with $400 going to the winning team. No more than two people per boat, each team member must fish in four of the tournaments to qualify for the Oct. tournament. Cost is $40 per boat.

“Rook, Music & More,” each Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bassett Ruritan Club on Philpott Dam Road, is a fun and relaxing time for people to get together to play games, work puzzles, do crafts and play rook. Feel free to bring something to do or food to share.

Bingo every Monday night at the Horsepasture Volunteer Fire Department. Doors open at 5 p.m., games start at 7 p.m.

San Jose Mexican Restaurant at 730 E. Church St., Patrick Henry Mall, has Karaoke Night every Sunday from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

“Masters of the Night: The True Story of Bats” is on display at the Virginia Museum of Natural History through January. The touring exhibit, produced by Evergreen Exhibitions, allows visitors to discover the real world of bats as diverse, beneficial mammals with fascinating skills.
