Memorial Day modifications: Trash, travel, mail and more

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, here are some reminders:

Memorial Day messaging and flag display

Memorial Day recognizes those who lost their lives while serving, or as a result of serving, in the military. Because the day is a solemn occasion, it’s important to avoid saying things like “Happy Memorial Day.” The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs also reminds people that the day differs from Veterans Day, observed November 11. While both holidays honor veterans, Memorial Day is meant to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

For those with flag poles on their property, Illinois’ Flag Display Act states that until noon on Memorial Day, the flag should be at half-staff. After that, it should be raised all the way.

Trash pickup

The following disposal companies are closed Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day. Trash pick-up is delayed by one day for that week only.

Rock River Disposal

Gill’s Freeport Disposal

Northern Illinois Disposal

Waste Management

Midwest Disposal

Moring Disposal/Republic Services

For questions, please check with your disposal company about how your trash collection may be impacted.

Mail and package delivery

The USPS is closed and does not deliver mail on Memorial Day. Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express and Holiday Same Day Package delivery are the only exceptions to its delivery.

FedEx’s offices will have modified hours. FedEx Custom Critical will also be open. As for express delivery, ground delivery, home delivery, ground economy and freight delivery – those services will not be available.
