The World’s Best Restaurants have just announced the first batch of winners
Scouring the world to keep on top of all of its most brilliant places to eat, especially when the restaurant scene has such high turnover, is no easy task. We certainly know of a fair few places, but so do the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Exactly 1,080 international restaurant industry experts, including critics, food writers, chefs and restaurateurs, vote in these awards every year. The top 50 will be announced on June 5, but we do know who’s been included in the top 100 for 2024.
The US had a few mentions. There were two entries in New York (Cosme and Le Bernardin) and in Chicago, Smyth claimed ninetieth place – the West Loop restaurant was also recently awarded its third Michelin star.
In Europe, London did well, with five establishments being recognised, and the highest ranking of these was Brat in number 65. ‘There are rows of convivial, almost-communal tables and a no-frills menu of meat and fish from a wood-fired oven, propped up by modern Brit small plates. In short: a handsome, buzzy, chop house,’ reads our review of the restaurant.
Despite their world-famous food scenes, only one restaurant from Paris and Barcelona made the list, respectively. That’s not to say these cities won’t feature in the top 50, mind you. You can check out our picks for their best places to eat in Paris here and in Barcelona here.
In Asia, Tokyo claimed two spots with Narisawa, a restaurant that champions the traditional satoyama farming system of premodern Japan at number 56, and Sazenka, a 12-seat place in the swanky Minami-Azabu district at number 93. You can read more about our picks for the city’s best restaurants here.
Singapore, home to plenty of amazing restaurants, claimed three spots – Meta came in at 95, Labyrinth at 92 and Burnt Ends, which encompasses not only a swanky dining room, but also a bakery, wine cellar, cocktail bar and restaurant, came in at number 68.
