Rogen Ladon fails in bid to reach second Games at 51kg

At 51kg, the Philippines’ Rio 2016 Olympian Rogen Ladon will not be going to Paris after he was beaten 4-1 on points by Spain’s Rafael Lozano Jr, the son of two-time Olympic medallist Rafael Lozano Sr.

Rio 2016 silver medallist Yuberjen Martinez made a successful start as he targets a third Olympic appearance, scoring a comfortable unanimous points verdict over Nepal’s Chandra Thapa.

So Chon-ryong of People’s Republic of Korea defeated Israel’s David Alaverdian 4-0, with Venezuela’s Keymberth Gonzalez, Carlos Suarez of Trinidad and Tobago, and Ecuador’s Luis Delgado also among those progressing. Huthaifa Eshish of Jordan defeated Ergyunal Sebahtin 4-1 on points.

David De Pina of Cabo Verde knocked out Serbia’s Omer Ametovic in the closing seconds, with Hamza Essaadi of Morocco stopping Fiji’s Chand Nehal late in the last round. Baresham Harutunyan of Armenia also prevailed inside the distance, stopping Tunisia’s Ala Eddine Zidi inside the last minute of the contest.

Ghana’s Theophilus Allotey won by unanimous decision against Hungary’s Attila Bernath. Republic of Korea’s Kim In-kyu beat Britain’s Kiaran MacDonald on a 3-2 split with both men having been one win shy of a quota spot in Busto Arsizio.

While the day was dominated by action from the men’s 51kg and 80kg classes, Willys Mendoza of Colombia beat Morocco’s Younes Bouhdid 3-0 to go through in the men’s +92kg superheavyweight division. Kennedy St Pierre of Mauritius also progressed with a unanimous decision over Ghana’s Mark Ahondjo.

Neither of the two bouts in the women’s 50kg class went the distance. Portugal’s Rita Soares took just 49 seconds to stop Sze Man Lee of Hong Kong, China. Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay also defeated Slovakia’s Nicole Durikova by ‘Referee stops contest’ late in round two.

The action continues on Sunday with bouts from the men’s 63.5kg and men’s 71kg classes.
